Unclaimed Money

It seems hard to believe that there’s unclaimed money out there. The Australian Taxation Office recently identified that there’s $14 billion1 sitting in unclaimed superannuation accounts!

We think that’s crazy. Nationally, it’s a big sum of money to consider. At an individual level there are lots of people who don’t have their money working for them right now for their retirement. Taking control and putting a financial plan in place means that you’re not willing to leave things to chance.

Find your lost superannuation now

Super Seeker by the Australian Taxation Office is a free online tool that you can search to find your lost superannuation now. If you’ve had more than one job, moved or perhaps even didn’t realise your employer was paying you super, you might have a lost superannuation account. Conduct a search for your family members too. If you find they have some, tell them they need to get their superannuation working for their retirement.

Find other Unclaimed Money

We can’t believe it either but yes, there’s other unclaimed money out there too. This comes from lost bank accounts, shares, investments and even life insurance policies. Each State and Territory has its own collection office on where you should look for unclaimed money. Not all locations have online systems but here’s the list to help you start exploring.

Find money from Deceased Estates

Sadly, there’s also a large amount of money held by government departments relating to deceased estates. You need to contact the Public Trustee in each State or Territory where the money is held to find out about it.
